How To Restore Your Skin Barrier: A Personal Journey to Healing and Protection

My journey with a damaged skin barrier began when I experimented with various skincare products mainly acids and exfoliants, without paying much attention to their ingredients or how they interacted with my skin. The result was a weakened barrier that left my skin feeling tight, inflamed, and prone to irritation. It was a wake-up call that prompted me to educate myself on the importance of skin barrier health and how to restore it.


Here are some insights I've gathered along the way, along with tips on how to avoid and fix a damaged skin barrier:


Identifying the Signs: Understanding the signs of a damaged skin barrier is essential for early intervention. Look out for symptoms such as tightness, redness, flakiness, itching, or a feeling of roughness. If you notice any of these, it's time to make some changes.

Don't Mix Acids: One of the many mistakes I made was using way too many acids. This was the main reasons my skin barrier was so damaged. Did you know you should never mix BHAs with retinoids or vitamin C etc …. as this can harm your skin or cause burning. Sun Protection: UV damage can exacerbate skin barrier issues, so don't skimp on sunscreen. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it generously every day, rain, or shine. Ps. This also helps prevent your skin aging as fast.



Patience and Consistency: Healing a damaged skin barrier takes time and consistent care. Be patient with your skin and stick to a gentle skincare routine tailored to your needs. Also try not to pick at your skin, this can lead to bacteria spreading and making your breakouts even worse!



My personal journey to healing my damaged skin barrier involved a combination of these strategies. I threw out all the acids and simplified my skincare routine, focusing on gentle, nourishing products and avoiding harsh ingredients that could further irritate my skin. I also prioritised hydration and sun protection, which made a significant difference in restoring my skin's health and resilience.
